I recently heard an experience from a near by congregation the proves you don't have to be smart or an inspiring teacher to be an elder, all you need to be is an unswerving company man. Elder not very bright was trying to read the word extemporaneous and he twice from the platform said ex temporary anus....

Sometimes it's the little things....
by dubstepped ini'm listening to a podcast where a former elder describes how another elder conducted the watchtower study about hyperbole.
the elder called it hyper-bowl.
soon the whole congregation called it hyper-bowl.

Therapists business is booming thanks to jw's

and once in while she will see a therapist to vent.

About 20 years ago the wife of a good friend pulled me aside and questioned my evident disrepair and suggested that I should talk to a professional, her female intuition could see right through me. "We don't share our problems with those guys" I replied, " No, no, this guy is good" she said, "he's that one all the elders go to". Oh, just what I needed to hear.

Suicide in the spiritual paradise all too common
by doubtfull1799 injust heard that a young brother committed suicide this week - the whole congregation is naturally very distressed.
what a tragedy.
according to my source he'd only been married about a year and his wife found him - he’d hung himself.

Wake Me: NEVER ONCE did I EVER tell my therapist that I was a Jehovah's Witness. I was too concerned about protecting the cult! ... That therapist was unable to help me.
Oh, ain't that the truth, when I think of all the good money I've shelled out over the years to these professionals in the hope of aiding wife and kids battling cognitive dissonance and depression.
As JP succinctly said - Most rank-and-file JWs with mental and emotional health problems are #^$@^% terrified of finding out that the cause of those problems is being a rank-and-file JW.

It was such a big deal in 1986 that they even minted comemorative coins https://www.australian-coins.com/complete-guide-australian-1-dollar-1-coins/1986-international-year-of-peace-dollar/

Even elders don’t know their beliefs
by Addison0998 ini had a deep conversation with my elder father today about the bible.
first i talked to him about luke 16:19-31. the one where jesus makes this crazy illustration regarding the afterlife.
of course he had to look it up on the watchtower library to be spoon fed his beliefs.

Hey Humbled, have a look at the video again around the 30 second mark onward, I'm sure the guy driving the boat is a young Stephen Lett.

interview with an apostate- morpheus
by _Morpheus inwhen i saw simons thread and the "interview" series of threads that came from it i really enjoyed reading the life stories of those that shared.
a bump for newer people seems like a good idea and i figured i would add mine as well.
again, thanks to simon for the concept of a guided interview thread and the template.. tell us a little about yourself and your family.. hmmm... easy question, hard answer.

So True Baldeagle - No one escapes this religion without some damage to his or her psyche.
It is like the barb on a fish hook, must be removed with care, even then there is sure to be some pain and rupture.

Atheists - How Did You Become An Atheist After Waking Up?
by pale.emperor ini consider myself an atheist.
and right now i'm reading a lot on atheism in general (books written to answer creationists).. i'd be interested in knowing how you became an atheist after leaving the jws and how long did it take?
was it instant or did your belief in a deity gradually decline?.

Reaction to baptism figures
by neat blue dog intalking about tomorrow's wt study, that mentions over a quarter of a million baptized every year, a jw asked how many that is a day.
i got out my calculator and answered over 778 a day.
of course they were amazed at the growth, but immediatly i googled another statistic and read it aloud:.

And I remember a time (late 60s through to mid-1970s) when non-raised-in candidates vastly outnumbered born-in candidates for baptisms.
